Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/17/2014

Number: 2

High 76F, very light breezes about 5 mph, mostly sunny, low 63F. RT hummers (all migrants) ate 3 oz.

RT hummers numbers down sharply today. Only saw two birds at a time twice today. Much less activity at the 4 feeders. There were noticeable spaces of time when no birds were evident. I cleaned and refilled the feeders due to the heavier activity yesterday. Most of the birds fed and then flew south; a few rested, fed again then flew off south. Only saw one obvious adult female (a little larger and duller), others were juveniles. I have two styles of feeders and some of the hummers obviously prefer one style to the other--they check out most or all of the feeders before feeding at one style. I do have a few birds that try out all the feeders.

Some of the migrant birds preferred the flowers I have blooming--red cannas, petunias in hanging baskets, and few remaining blooms on the althea and black and blue salvia--to feeding at the feeders. Most of these plants are nearing the end of blooming. I have some asters, cone flowers, coreopsis, zinnias and montauk daisies beginning to bloom or blooming but I have not seen any hummers visiting them.
