Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/16/2014

Number: 1000

Note received from Don T, Biodiversity Specialist in the park. While these reports of large numbers of monarchs along the north shores of Lakes Ontario and Erie are impressive, they do not give an accurate impression of where the population is at. These are excellent and strategic locations along the migration route, containing lots of flowering plants such as golden rod and New England aster, and generally reliable for seeing large numbers of monarchs:

Hi Don
Yes lots of Monarchs this week at Presqu’ile. I was on High Bluff Island on Tuesday (Sept. 16) and did a few counts of the widely dispersed butterflies. 1000 is a conservative estimate based on a few random spot counts. I suspect the “real” number was at least twice that.
