Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/25/2014

Number: 3

I've been having computer issues so have been unable to report for a few days. Weather dreary today --cloudy with drizzle after off and on rain overnight(not complaining--desperately need the rain), 66 F after low of 59 F, winds at least 20 mph (seeing lots of white caps on the Potomac River) from the NW blowing SE. Birds are consuming 2-3 oz. a day total since my last report.

Over the last few days have seen mostly single RT birds at the feeders (have left 4 up but decreased the amount in each feeder so I don't have to dump excess when I clean and refill) but occasional doubles sometimes doing hummingbird acrobatics and sometimes feeding peacefully. All today I have had a juvenile (appears to be female or at least no beginning gorget) guarding or trying to guard all the feeders. I am still seeing an occasional adult female but the vast majority of the RT hummers are juveniles. I added some new red petunias to the hanging baskets because the althea, black and blue salvia and butterfly bush are about finished blooming. My spider lilies (british soldiers) have just come into bloom but haven't seen any hummers on them yet. If the hummers follow the dates for the last few years I am close to seeing the last of them...sigh...
