Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 09/25/2014

Number: 30

After 24 hrs of blowing NE winds and rain, along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, in the morning hours of September 25th, the skies somewhat cleared and the winds diminished. While viewing the ocean, we began to see Monarch Butterflies soaring with the NNE winds, headed South along the dune line. Observing for only a total of about 1 to 2 hours during the course of the day, we were able to see approximately 20 to 30 Monarchs. At one point we were able to see or photograph at least 10 Monarchs feeding on Gaillardia, (Jobell) flowers that were growing along Hwy 12 just North of Buxton, NC.
