Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/17/2014

Number: 300

Point Pelee reported 2000+ Monarchs roosting in the trees on the evening of 9/16/14. My sister and I arrived at the park by 9:00am on 9/17, it was a clear and sunny morning and we were not able to locate the roost before they warmed enough to leave the trees. We traveled the West Beach foot trail, and there was a continuous stream of monarchs flying in the direction of the shore, but no matter how far we went in the direction they were coming from, they just kept coming from further away. When we finally decided to turn back and go south, we noticed a few stop in a tree. We stopped for a photo op and witnessed one after another join the group. They multiplied into the hundreds before our eyes. The time of this grouping was approximately 12:15pm, with another similar experience further down the trail around 1pm.
I was able to tag 13 with my remaining tags for this season. THE512-THE524, (8) males and (5) females.
