Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/14/2014

Number: 100

While sitting on beach at Montauk Point I observed monarchs flying west towards Fire Island, N.Y. I arrived at beach abt noon and while sitting on sand started seeing monarchs flying over the dunes. They were alone and in small groups coming from water and flying over the dunes. I observed at least one hundred. Beautiful sight.

I stayed on the ocean beach at Montauk from about noon till near six pm. The weather was sunny and warm with a gently breeze coming from northeast (I think). I noticed a monrch while crossing over the dunes. After sitting and greeting friends, I started to notice more of them. Some coming from the direction of the ocean and others coming from the east. All heading west and flying low over the dunes. Some were traveling alone and others in groups of up to five or six. I was thrilled to see them. It seems that I was the only one who noticed them. I did make sure that others knew they were there. I even spoke to a beach employee asking if he had noticed the migration during the past week. He had no idea but said that he would be looking in the future. I walked the beach heading west staying close to the dunes and sure enough there they were beautiful big colorful monarchs some resting and others in the air. Not really just how many I saw because I lost count. Last year on Fire island during migration only saw about seven.
