Hummingbird Sighting

Date: 09/28/2014

Number: 2

Weather--low of 63F, high of 82F; partly sunny going to cloudy by late afternoon; slight breezes (under 5 mph).

One RT juvenile on feeder this morning...but sighted two this evening which engaged in aerial combat for a couple of minutes. One was feeding quietly when the other came up behind, hovering, then closed in until the first joined in combat. Consumption down slightly to just under 2 oz. (maybe 1.8 oz.) Still 4 feeders up.

Some of the birds seen today preferred my flowers. Flowers sampled included my new blue cardinal flowers (birds checked these out first each time), black and blue salvia (new blooms), agastache, butterfly bush, and walker's low nepeta.

Several of the juveniles have been chirping/chittering vigorously between sips of nectar while sitting on the feeder perches. (behavior left over from begging mother for food?)
