Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 09/28/2014

Number: 50

The day was sunny and warm with a slight breeze in central Iowa, and the movement of monarch butterflies was surprising after limited numbers seen in recent days. At Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, 20 monarchs were counted in an hour in the late morning. Most were flying into the refuge from the north. Another 15 monarchs were seen along central Iowa roadways. Back in our butterfly garden in Altoona, the monarchs were having a field day visiting the purple and pink asters--much more so than earlier this autumn. At least 15 monarchs were coming and going for several hours in the afternoon. A wonderful sight to say the least.
