Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/27/2014

Number: 1000

Estimate count of four hundred Monarchs on 40 acres plus of aster and sunflower. Across the hill, a Maximillian Sunflower patch planted into a water way has count of 100 Monarchs. A patch of .6 acre of Maximillian estimated at 500 Monarchs. In total 1000 Monarchs at the farm late this afternoon (9/27/14).

Presume roosting has been occurring each night for several weeks (September 17-28), in varying numbers; I have not looked each evening, but when I have there was roosting. Monarchs roosted on the sunflowers, as seen in the video. In addition to the roosts on sunflowers, monarchs were roosting in the maple tree and pine tree.

Editor's Note: Video and photo were taken 9/28/14. Roosting on flowers -- instead of in trees -- is a valuable observation and could be temperature-related. Overnight low temperatures were 55F both nights (9/27/14 and 9/28/14).
