Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/28/2014

Number: 37

Just before sunset last night (9/28) there were 41 Monarchs at this site. This morning (9/29) , in the dew I would count 37 plus one Painted Lady. While the Monarchs chose passive heating, the PL trembled and shook, burning energy with its muscles to both shake off the fine droplets and to warm up to flight temperature for departure. (Photos avail). These butterflies are NW of Point Pelee and were flying from the NE and the soybean fields at dusk (advanced by heavy cloud cover). Asters were food choice here.
The willow trees here are in a drainage ditch at the edge of a highway.
