Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 09/01/2014

Number: 250

Monarchs were seen roosting on a willow tree on several different occasions throughout the week prior to the 13.

We first saw the Monarchs in the early evening on September 1, 2014. I would estimate about 250 total at that time on our willow tree and another maple tree in our backyard in northville, SD. We noticed them each evening for about 4 days. We all are gone to work and school all day but I did notice them on the morning of September 3. I honestly can't say if they were there every morning that week because I didn't go out to the backyard any other mornings! The evening of September 1 had the largest roost and each evening there were fewer but still an impressive number. I would estimate around 100 the second two evenings and then probably 40-50 the next evening. The count on September 3 (morning) was probably around 100 like the evening count.

The following week (9/7-13) we noticed about 10-12 monarchs around some of our flowers....we enjoyed watching them but it was nothing after seeing such a large number the week before! It's been about 7-8 years ago but we noticed back then a large amount of monarchs at around the same time of year. At that time they were on the trunk of a maple tree in our backyard.
