The Cape May Monarch Monitoring Project census tallied 27.9 monarchs per hour yesterday. Actual counts of monarchs are impossible in Cape May Point, with monarchs in many scattered locations. In the early years of our project it was determined that counts made along the dunes are typically misleading, as monarchs moving along the waterfront here at land's end routinely move back and forth or loop around to pass the same point repeatedly. Accordingly we have found that our census is the best source of comparative data on monarch populations from year to year. See our census data from 1992 to the present at http://www.monarchmonitoringproject.com/mmptwo.html.
