Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 10/02/2014

Number: 130

Unlike last Sunday, we didn’t see many Monarchs at Cherry Gap, so we drove up and down the Blue Ridge Parkway in the vicinity and checked various other locations. The best place was the 5494’ elevation Fetterbush Gap overlook (near Devil’s Courthouse) where my wife and I counted 50 in 15 minutes. Most paused in the asters and goldenrods south of the road, which allowed me to take some nice pictures. Another strong place was the View of Funnel Top overlook. The sky was a mix of sunshine and cumulous clouds, and the temperature ranged between 65 and 80 degrees depending upon the shade of the moment. We also saw ten or so brilliant migrating Cloudless Sulfur Butterflies fluttering by in a hurry and what might have been 12 Broadwing Hawks spiraling up in a thermal to gain altitude before zipping away southwest.
