Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/03/2014

Number: 2

Weather is changing almost hourly. Low of 64 F and high of 73 F. Near calm breezes early this morning changing to light to medium winds(steady 10 mph with gusts to 15 mph or higher) beginning from ENE and switching to E and now ESE. Began partly cloudy with lowering and deepening cloud deck but just in last 15 minutes sun is coming out to west. Rain and cooler temps forecast for this evening.

Two sightings--one monarch this morning about 8:30 am was about 15 ft up flapping south while the breezes were slight. This afternoon as the winds built from the east I just sighted a second monarch struggling to fly south--it climbed higher up to 40 - 50 ft. but was no more successful. It then doubled back to my zinnias and pansies and began feeding. It has tried a couple more times to move south but been forced back by the increasing winds each time. It is still nectaring intermittently. I hope it can find somewhere safe to shelter tonight. In past years I have occasionally found a single monarch drowned after rainstorms.
