The front wave of the migration has hit Dallas! We had a nice cold front blow through October 2nd, and the day of the 3rd was sunny and cool with a steady north breeze. By the afternoon, there were approximately 50 Monarchs in the garden, nectaring on Gregg's mistflower and Frostweed. If you looked up in the sky, every 3-5 minutes you could see Monarchs soaring south - some were very high. The garden Monarchs are not chasing eachother around looking for a mate (normal activity), but instead totally ignoring eachother in favor of nectaring. The numbers of Monarchs in the garden at this point (October 3rd) are much higher than last year - a welcome development!
