I have a registered monarch way station. I noticed on Thursday, Oct 2nd I had several caterpillars munching on my milkweed. I collect, house and raise them to adults and then release them. I have 55 that are within a week of chrysalis stage, and 9 that are a week or less old. As I pick leaves each day to feed them, I discover more on my plants. I released a male today that I had found earlier on a volunteer milkweed plant. He was my first release since this summer. I had 4 males & four females (monarchs) I released. I also had the same number of queens I released. I also had one black swallowtail. I witnessed the larva & pupa stage. I ended up missing the emergence of the adult, but saw the empty chrysalis.
I am a teacher of high school students that take a class to teach preschoolers. I take my monarchs and expose all the students and children to them. I have shown them all four stages and over the years many of them have witnessed the chrysalis forming and the emergence of adults.
