Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/01/2014

Number: 5

Looking back at my tagging data, I believe the "peak" migration dates in my area might be 8/30 to 9/1, although that is based on times I was not at work and I was able to observe them. I tagged a total of 56 this year, 28 wild and 28 reared by myself or my neighbor. What are the odds of that!? Wild were 8F and 20M, reared were 19F and 9M…which I guess proved that guys ARE wilder! The reared ones were emerging in "waves", probably due to us collecting them as eggs or small larva from our garden milkweed plants… based on tagging data starting 8/15, butterfly baby booms were 8/14-16, 9/3-5, and 9/18-19.

Another note… A neighbor child reported seeing some monarchs in her tree on Sept. 13. I didn't see them myself, so didn't report as a roost…I scoured the area and didn't see them, only had a couple at my butterfly bushes and tagged them. It was VERY windy that day and they may have traveled across Lake Erie and taken a quick rest before heading on.

It was encouraging this year compared to last year when I was only able to tag 12 wild and was not able to find ANY eggs or caterpillars to raise. I hope the trend continues and we have more next year. I have some leftover tags (about 40) - if anyone in the southern states is in need, I can mail them to you if you send me an email. Thanks!
