Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 10/07/2014

Number: 300

I was contacted by a fellow Master Naturalist, Hollis Neier, who lives on Lake Buchanan that she had many Monarchs. I went to see and found at least 300 in the area between her home and the lake. This area would ordinarily be under water but with our drought, the lake is 35 feet below normal. The vegetation is thus what has sprouted in the 6 years since the drought began. Most of the vegetation that the Monarchs were nectaring on was Poverty Bush (Baccharis neglecta)and a few Frostweed. The Monarchs were there yesterday (10/06) also. Don't know if they roosted there and stayed or if today's are different ones. We looked at about half a square mile of area and believe there were still more.
