Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/02/2014

Number: 108

Oct 2, a friend and I started at White Lake WMA in Dyer County, TN at 0715 looking specifically for monarchs.

At start, we worked about a 100 yard strip of vegetation, maybe 20 yards wide, dominated by Pennsylvania smartweed. I estimated about 70 monarchs between 7:15 and 8:30. We counted independently and my friend thought over 100. But more importantly, we both thought monarchs were flying from the forest and into this vegetation to nectar or bask. Many did not stop at all.

Short story, we ended with a conservative count of over 100 by 10:00, and a total by end of day at 2:30, 141 individual monarchs, again conservative.

Another point, number of individuals dropped dramatically between
about 9:30 and noon, then by the afternoon, monarchs became hard to find. I assume left on migration.
