Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 10/08/2014

Number: 158

Today was another good day for monarchs in Cape May. With the winds calming down the monarchs moved to the goldenrod on the dunes. It was a spectacular sight. Our daily census route, which is in Cape May Point, calculated 158 per hour today. The monarchs were also seen on the goldenrod in Cape May City along the dunes, which is not on our census route. So calculating a total for the island is a bit challenging but it had to be at least a thousand. There were also reports that Stone Harbor and Brigantine had lots too moving and feeding in the goldenrod. Roosts were small groups of 25 - 75 butterflies with many of these spread out along the pines in the dunes.
