Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/09/2014

Number: 1500

Nice roost last night (10/09). Many more than last year. Have roosted in same area for 50+ years. Little nectaring, are getting water from creek. Not as clustered today (10/10), some may have left.

October 14
Rather strong norther and rain came in last Saturday morning (10/11). Monarch roosting have gone. Still have 30 or so nectaring. The main plants they are feeding on are 5 foot tall celosia. I've seen as many as 30 monarchs on one of these plants.

I estimated the number of monarchs in a given cubic area and then estimated the number of cubes that had butterflies and figured from there. It was a truly magical place for a few days.

Editor's Note: The other roost reported from Ponder, Texas on 10/10 is a separate roost, and about 7 miles from this one.
