Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 10/10/2014

Number: 1

I have been breeding monarch butterflies in my yard for two years now. I had to build an enclosure to protect the larvae and caterpillars because they were extremely vulnerable to predators like wasps and lizards. The scarlet milkweed plant is the monarch's favored host plant here so I was able to find quite a lot early on. I also was able to harvest seed from a few pods and grow more plants once the plants became scarce in most garden stores here.

I am extremely proud to report that last year I successfully released 74 monarchs and this year, exceeded that count to 92. My season is over now and I do miss my garden fairies. This year I introduced my brother-in-law to breeding them and he has probably released over 100. We both are so proud to do our little part in the protection of such a beautiful species.
