Our family went to Matthaei Botanical Gardens to enjoy the many gardens there. we explored the Children's garden, Great Lakes gardens and the area around the large pond. the kids were looking for frogs by the pond, when Maya spotted a male monarch in the grass. It was 54F, bright sun, beautiful fall day--the monarchs was basking with its wings pointed directly at the sun. But it was still so chilled, it could not fly well. I picked it up and put it on Queen Anne's lace, but it did not feed. So we decided to carry it over to the gateway garden, where many flowers are still in bloom, and it is a garden protected by the wind--a slightly warmer spot, and what I hoped would have a better microclimate for mr. monarch. I placed him on a verbena bonariensis flower and he immediately began feeding.
