Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/09/2014

Number: 230

Point Pelee/Leamington area:

Oct 09: fresh migrants arriving daily and leaving at daybreak both in the park and heading west in urban Leamington.

Oct 8 there were approx. 200 at the tip late in the afternoon. Today 9 Oct there were approx. 230.

They are collecting on the Hackberry and Hop Trees and also on the Wild Grape draped over the trees within 200 ft of the vegetated part of the tip.

Outside the park there are many sites with RedClover that get recharged with small numbers of fresh monarchs daily. The fliers stay close to the ground cover. Painted Lady numbers remain comparable to Monarchs in those pasture-like spots.

The male migrants are showing reduced size in this late brood. The fresh females seem larger, but still smaller than summer adults.
Whitecaps were on Pigeon Bay both days.

Sulphurs and Whites remain in high numbers.
