What extraordinary, amazing, creatures these little birds are. Right at sunrise 7:13am I saw our girl who we have now dubbed "Tiny Dancer" on her feeder. She's been with us for a week getting plump. It was 48 degrees, sunny with winds E @ 5 to 10 MPH. I had just put out fresh room temperature sugar water. Like normal she drank for about 1 minute then flew off in a NNE direction. I saw her once again at 8:10am perched on her feeder but this time I felt something was different. She sat slowly turning her head, as if trying to put to memory the sights and sounds of my garden around her, then she would take a long sip. It was at that moment that I knew in my heart she was leaving, starting on the next leg of her journey south. I felt tears well up in my eyes knowing I would miss her and I continued to watch her gaze and sip until 8:21am. I knew what was coming...sure enough she flew straight up over the house in a SSW direction and she was gone. I said a prayer for her safe journey south and that she would find peaceful havens with sweet nectar on her way. GodSpeed little one and may you find my garden once again next year!
