Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/13/2014

Number: 3

Came home @ 2:30 pm after walking my dog in the neighborhood to find 3 monarchs (2 were females, the third I couldn't sex because it left heading south as soon as I approached). All 3 were on my (miniature, seedless "Lo and Behold Blue Chip") butterfly bushes feeding to beat the band.

Note: Buddleia aka butterfly bushes are invasive plants and should NOT be planted unless you purchase one of the new sterile hybrids. They replace/out compete native species that are host plants for butterfly caterpillars in the wild. Lack of host plants for caterpillars means no butterflies. In addition, caterpillars are the main food for nestling birds so lack of host species means no birds. I plant host species native to my area but do add a few species that are just for nectar provided they are not invasive. See the Native Plant Society in your state or Doug Tallamy for more information on native species.

Weather--low of 59 f and high of 71; began cloudy with drizzle, then light to moderate rain, then cleared in afternoon to mostly cloudy, slight breezes in morning calming to near still in afternoon
