After a second night of frigid temps in the low 40's, the sun was shining with temps in the mid 60's. With a strong southeast wind with wind gusts of 20+ mph I spotted 165 monarchs. The strong wind was a challenge for the monarchs feeding on the goldenrod in which many kept getting blown off. As the clouds started to roll in, they settled in their roosts in the pine trees early around 3:45. Many roosted on the goldenrod appearing hungry and fatigued. Similar to last night the roosts were small averaging 1-6 monarchs.
The attached photo is a monarch who struggled with the wind to get back to the goldenrod and took a break on the fence.
