Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/14/2014

Number: 300

I am located in Lytton Springs, about 25 miles South of Austin, and today I saw more Monarchs than ever before. I would estimate a good 300+ butterflies, although they were flitting about and impossible to count. I will not be seeing them roosting, but I have lots of willow, ash, and pecan as well as the usual oaks and junipers. They are very keen on the Frostweed we have in abundance on our 50 acres.

Forwarded by Texas insect expert, Mike Quinn, who noted: It's unusual to receive reports of such numbers east of I-35 in the Austin area. I did notice the recent NNW winds. They were a likely contributor/cause of these slightly wayward monarchs.
