Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/15/2014

Number: 4

Four monarchs feeding mainly on red purple agastache. Two were females, one was a male and the last I could not get a good look at before it left heading south. All were fairly skittish. All came in from the north and fed for over an hour before the first left--by the end of the 2nd hour all have moved on--two went east and the other two went south. All were clean and brightly colored recently emerged butterflies. They were competing with numerous small dusky brown butterflies and some moths, flies that mimicked small bees and a couple of small butterflies. There is a large weather front that was about 2 hours to my west whilst I was observing the butterflies. It is now here with heavy rain.

Weather--mostly cloudy becoming cloudy during observation, low of 72 F with high of 76 F (cooling to 74 now due to heavy rain --rain forecast to last until near dusk), some tornado warnings have been issued to my west and north already and some thunderstorms embedded in front here and there, gusty winds from SE this morning now have calmed somewhat, very heavy rain began right at noon and is now alternating with moderate rain
