Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/17/2014

Number: 1

One female monarch feeding fervently on my seedless, miniature buddleja aka butterfly bush midday for two hours. (I may have seen another monarch in the distance when I was walking my dog but it dove behind a bush before I could be sure of it...thus, I only reported the one.) This might be one of the females I've seen the last couple of days since the winds have been out of the S or SE. She was skittish but brightly colored, no tatters, very recently minted. This makes monarch sighting number 28 for the year. I am only seeing butterflies in the middle of the day now. The temperatures are still high enough in the late afternoon for them to be active but the monarchs I've seen this week seem to stop feeding around 3 pm and look for someplace to overnight. I am still seeing reports of butterflies to my north so I am hoping for more sightings.

Weather--gusty winds this morning and afternoon from S to SE (seeing occasional whitecaps on the river so some of the gusts must have been close to 20 mph, steady breezes around 10 mph until dusk when the winds quickly died down; low of 54 F and high of 75 F; sunny all day Cooling tomorrow to mid 60's for high. Forecast Sunday is for high around 59 and low in low to mid 40's with similar cooler temperatures all next week.
