Monarch Adult Sighted
Sightings report image

Date: 10/17/2014

Number: 60

Low 57F. Warmed quickly. High 84. Wind south most of day but dropped to calm late in afternoon. Wind shift to north started about sunset. Saw about 60 total all during the day, widely distributed.

Other than in one grove, most were one at a time. Many appeared to be flying directionally south, opposite the general wind direction, by flying in areas shielded from wind by terrain or trees, or by taking advantage of eddy flow near the ground and around trees and shrubs. Saw about 20 in a tree grove at 1100. Others at different locations and times, flying along or across several county roads, past the overlook café deck at Fossil Rim and on our property. Just after sunset, several drifted past our house.

Hopefully the picture will work on internet resolution. Taken about 10 minutes after sunset (in the direction of the radio tower), when a monarch flew through the frame, right of center. It was not clear whether it went into or around the Live Oak at left.
