Monarch PEAK Migration
Sightings report image

Date: 10/18/2014

Number: 2400

The numbers of monarchs have held pretty steady the last few days in Cape May. But today, they were arriving on the W winds, streaming down the dunes in Cape May Point. Everywhere you looked you could see monarchs. 100 at one time all around the dunes. I counted 40 in one minute fly by me. This did not include all the ones on the street below me, I was counting just in front of me on the dune line. Our census run numbers, which are done below the dunes, tallied 146 in 36 minutes. Only a few small roosts of 20 - 60, were found tonight. There were also places with many single monarchs. I did notice many monarchs fed on goldenrod til 6 pm. The picture is of one of many goldenrod plants that had at least 25 - 30 butterflies feeding on it. We'll see what tomorrow brings as it's supposed to be cold and very windy.
