Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/18/2014

Number: 6

Relatively few monarchs have been seen in our area this fall, but we've noticed that the numbers have picked up over the past week.

I have had, each fall since living in Georgia. assigned several undergrads from my lab to catch monarchs each week during mid-Sept to early Nov. We typically capture several hundred adults to be measured and released during this time. Peak numbers here tended to occur around Oct 10-12 in past years. Last year (2013) we did not catch any adults in our area during the fall, because we barely saw any. This fall (2014) we've caught maybe 30 in total. This past week has been the most we've seen during the entire fall. It is not huge numbers but more than last fall.
