Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 09/29/2014

Number: 1

Survey at Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area in Belen. Return to mapped horsetail milkweed to search for monarch caterpillars and adults. Observed a tattered adult monarch nectaring with the queens at flowering seep willow (Baccharis Sp.). All sunflowers done flowering, most milkweed developed pods and ready to ripen. Found two monarch caterpillars (one in previous milkweed a half inch long) and the second caterpillar large enough to develop it's chrysalis. Fair number of milkweed moths (some eating green seed pods).
