Overnight low 61, high 82. Wind was light mostly N to NE. Alsmot calm by early afternoon. All Monarch sightings today were separate and were all flying directionally SSW. All were flapping more than gliding even when wind aided. All observations incidental.
Early afternoon saw four at different locations all flying within 5 feet of the ground. Just before and after sunset we saw 10 fly past our house. Lowest was about 15 feet up. At least half were at 50 feet or more. Most climbed as they moved away, and gained speed as wind speed increase with height. A couple circled the large live oak next to the house, but then continued south.
Those I followed with binoculars showed no sign of descending. They were climbing relative to our location, while the ground beneath slopes down, so they were at 200-300 feet height when I could no longer see them. Last one sighted was about ten minutes after sunset. After five minutes with none, stopped watching.
