On a beautiful sunny autumn day with temps in the high 60's and a strong southwest wind with gusts up to 25 mph I spotted 82 monarchs. The monarchs struggled with the wind and were being blown off the golden rod. In less than 6 days 80% of the golden rod, the monarchs primary food source in the area has died off.
Monarchs took to snuggling into their roosts around 5 pm. The roosts were small with one or two monarchs.
