Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/21/2014

Number: 50

This observation was made in the Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area, Kendall County, Texas. This area includes 117 scenic acres along the Guadalupe River containing six habitats: riparian, oak savanna, disturbed woodland, open juniper - oak woodland, closed-canopy juniper - oak woodland, and old field.

The fall roost includes 1,700 feet of riparian habitat along the Guadalupe River with a ground cover of Frostweed (Verbesina virginica), an important nectar plant for Monarch Butterfly. Monarchs were observed roosting, nectaring, and flying about the area. Clearly, this is a very important fall roost for the Edwards Plateau area.
