Lisa organized a SW Monarch Study workshop in a rancher's yard. We found seven 5th instar monarch larvae still in Asclepias subverticillata patches and 6 pupae on a nearby fence. Tagged one fresh monarch in the field and spotted several others flying by. At the end, while still talking about the successful morning, a female monarch launched from a nearby tree like a bullet and together we watched her climb on a 45 degree angle high into the sky flying south. Then she paused and joined a hawk high in a thermal and out of sight - what an exciting moment for all of us watching her!
