Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/11/2014

Number: 50

The Oak Leaf Trail was swarming with Monarchs this weekend (Oct. 11 & 12). I have never seen so many together at one time! I was at the bottom of the walkway near Brady and Prospect. The little purple flowers next to the trail were covered with them. People were stopping to watch them. I also so quite few where the trail begins near Prospect and Lincoln Memorial Drive.

I went back on Monday about noon (weather was cool and overcast) and took some photos of the monarchs still in the same location, at the base of the bluff along the Lake Michigan shoreline. The monarchs were feeding at a patch of New England asters and boneset. I estimate seeing about 50 combined at the two patches on the weekend days. (We have not had a hard frost near the lake yet.)
