Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/24/2014

Number: 300

Cunningham Ranch at far south end of Quemado Valley 18 miles N of Eagle Pass, TX. Yesterday afternoon there were some 300 monarchs roosting in loose clusters of 4-8 and some even 18-20 monarchs throughout our pecan bottoms located at the base of a steep 300'bluff on the banks of the Rio Grande. A small creek runs at the bottom of the bluff and amongst the pecan and ash trees. A dense canopy also contributes to the still air. Two days earlier the numbers were at least in the 500 range. We had several overcast days with still air and mild nights and none of the monarchs were migrating. Now Thur./Fri./ Sat (today) are/were all very sunny and night temps dropped to 65 with a high today of 91 and breezes from SSE at 7-10mph. Report submitted to Rio Bravo Nature Center, Eagle Pass.
