Sightings report image

Number: 1

In 1993 we restored 160 acres to Tallgrass prairie on our family farm. We used local ecotype native grass seed including Big bluestem, Indiangrass, Switchgrass, Sideoats grama, Little bluestem and green needlegrass. Wildflower seed was collected from our prairie remnants the year before and was added to the seed mixture. The land is managed organically, has become very species diverse and now native orchids are found throughout. Diversity is the key to providing habitat for wildlife, the pollinators need a continuous food source. Key species we look for are Greater prairie chicken, Western meadowlark, Bobolink, Monarch and Regal fritillary butterfly and native bees. On a still day in the summer the hum of the bees on our grassland is tremendous. I know we are doing something right.
