Monarch Larva Sighted

Date: 10/26/2014

Number: 1

Was outside checking on the 100 or so larvae still munching on my tropical milkweed when I spotted a 1st instar. I've taken this little guy indoors. All others are loosely covered with mesh sleeves. He looks a little discolored at one end so either he's about to molt or he isn't going to make it. There has been the usual Fall fluctuating temps here - cold and rainy/windy and then some days of sunny, warmer temps. It may have been too much for him. Other larvae are 4th and 5th instar with about 25 or so third instars. We're fortunate that we have permits to ship them farther south once they've pupated.
