Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/10/2014

Number: 349

Man-made park that forms an "L that juts south out into Lake Ontario and is about 5 kilometers long. Built from construction rubble and now primarily construction soil. Has it's own Friends organization and has been designated as an Important Bird Area. Lots of milkweed and in the fall, huge amounts of golden rod.

FYI - From Anne Gray, member, Toronto Entomologists' Association:

I have just checked my Monarch numbers for Leslie Street Spit on my monitoring days so far in October. They are:

1) on 2 October 2014, in 2 hours in the am - 14 Monarchs

2) on 10 October , in 5 hours of monitoring on this sunny day - 349 Monarchs.

3) on 16 October, in 6.5 hours of monitoring. There was drizzle and heavy fog until 12:20pm followed by sunshine and a SW breeze. - 42 Monarchs included 1 pair mating in flight.

4) on 23 October, in 5 hours of sunshine - 27 Monarchs.

We monitor the Spit once a week and have for the past 16 years - all our reports go to the TRCA (Toronto Region Conservation Authority) database, and I attend the TTPUG (Tommy Thompson Park User Group) meetings on behalf of TEA and as a Volunteer Naturalist.
