Hummingbird Sighting (Adult Male)
Sightings report image

Date: 10/27/2014

Number: 2

Observed two male RT's yesterday and again today. The younger one (I assume because he's much smaller) has been visiting all summer. Today was the first time I saw the bigger one. I didn't realize how small the little one was until today when the bigger one showed up and chased him off.

I had a immature male overwinter last year. I wonder if the bigger one is him or just a passer thru?

I set a feeder out last week, although there are plenty of things in bloom still. I've seen a hummer on the feeder once. They mostly love the russelia sarmentosa (upright variety) right now. My red firecracker, red firespike, coral porterweed, and coral honeysuckle are still in bloom.
Today I observed an adult male on red firespike and an immature male on coral porterweed and russelia sarmentosa (upright variety).

The adult male only fed once while I was at my spying post. The younger male made a few visits. One time, he stopped to watch me, but I stayed very still so he continued to feed within 2 feet of me! He doesn't mind the cat walking around meowing, but if I so much as turn my head he flies away.

I am attaching a photo of the adult male at the red firespike. It's kind of dark because of the white fence in the background, but you can still make out his ruby throat.
