Was searching for a barred owl, haven't seen Monarch butterflies for two years now - when all of a sudden one passed while driving at a slow speed. I pulled over and went over to the branch where it perched - my face was within 2 feet of the monarch, but trying to put my cellphone camera within 6 inches spooked it away. It was large, freshly colored, healthy looking and heading north, hopefully he turns south soon.
