About 23 monarch butterflies were observed feeding on a colony of frostweed (Verbesina virginica) in this observers backyard near to dusk, about 19:00.
Monarchs were dropping down from the sky near this time and were observed roosting in a hackberry below the frostweed colony. The observers backyard is heavily planted with native plants and trees, and while observer has seen monarchs and other butterflies on a daily basis, she has never before seen such a quantity as this.
