Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 10/28/2014

Number: 1

I was very surprised when I saw a monarch butterfly flying up our long driveway this afternoon around 1 PM. We live 350 feet from the road and we are surrounded by 8 acres of mixed hardwoods and hemlocks. First of all, I didn't expect to see any more monarchs until next summer, since most should be near or in Mexico right now. Still, this tardy monarch butterfly was a welcome sight for me! I hope she or he has time to make it to Mexico. I'm not so sure.

Unfortunately it was very gusty - 15-25 MPH coming from the south west. Perhaps monarchs avoid the open fields when there is a northerly wind direction. Woods travel might prove more protective. I wonder.
