Monarch Fall Roost
Sightings report image

Date: 10/19/2014

Number: 2000

The monarchs come through here every year, and still did this year. In the thousands. They hang on the ends of pecan tree branches, filing in line like wisteria blossoms. They were here for 8 days (10/19-28), barely leaving their positions on the trees. On the morning of October 27, a north front hit at 7:45 a.m. We suspected this was their signal to move on. One by one, they opened their wings to reveal their beautiful orange color. Each one would practice flap 2 or 3 times, but within 10 seconds of their unfolding they were taking off. Definitely south. 2 hrs later all were gone.

First noticed the roost 19th of October. So did neighbors on their trees. They left on the morning of the 28th (i-phone date of the pics), definitely as a consequence of a wind change to the north.
