Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/29/2014

Number: 5000

Starting around 5:30 PM we started to notice a steady stream of Monarchs circling over our property. We mostly saw them swirling around a few trees towards the back of our property, so I imagine they picked those to roost for the night. We had a hard time telling for sure where they were landing. We have a property with a lot of native landscape left, which also abuts to a greenbelt with native trees remaining as well. By the time I could see enough on the trees, it was too dark to get a photo. It has been several years since we saw so many Monarchs here. The last time we had a roost was about 7-8 years ago, and the tree right next to the house was so full it was completely orange. We hoped they'd roost in the same tree this year, but no.

Editor's Note: The observer estimated this number of butterflies, though the comments comparing to a previous year may indicate fewer.
