It was a warm windy day, with a strong wind from the south and temp in the high 40sF. The butterfly was having a hard time flying into the wind. It kept getting blown back north, so then it would settle back down on a plant stalk.
I'm wondering if it was newly emerged, and had gotten frozen - or at least very cold while it was in its chrysalis. (We've had several cold nights including one that was below 20F.) Maybe that's why the outer side of the wings were so white, and the top edge of one wing was crumpled. The upper side of the wings looked normally colored.
